| Ya know, I'm beginning to look at it this way. I was walking into the mall with my mother the other day and about halfway between the mall and the car, my mother stopped and gasped, "Oh my God! Did I lock the car?". Now, I looked at her and told her, "Look, even if you didn't, it will be fine. No one is going to get in your car. Don't worry about it", but she marched back and checked anyway. When she got back, I asked her to look around and guess how many cars were parked around us. Two, three hundred, maybe? And I said to her, "Imagine I told you someone was going to come out here and leave $10,000 in one of these cars, do you think you'll be the lucky one that gets picked?" "Of course not", she said. Do you see how silly that is? The odds are the same one way or the other. If it is something bad, everyone is convinced it is going to happen to them. Even the chance is one in a million, people are sure they will be the one picked for the bad thing. But if it is a million to one that a good thing will happen, everyone is sure it will never happen to them. Same odds. Different mindset.It doesn't take much to convince human beings that the end of the world is just around the corner, that the boogie man is under the bed and the evil monkey is in the closet. They see doomsday everywhere. They see it in the mall parking lot, in the grocery store... in the patterns of stars in the sky... whatever. It is so easy to believe something bad is going to happen, even though it hardly ever does. Near as I can tell, from what I've read, people have been paranoid like this from day one. And I don't see it changing anytime soon. |
